about

I left rural East Calais Vermont on the second of September, boarding the train in Montpelier with three other passengers at a station the size of a dive bar photo booth and was deposited eight hours later on Manhattan Island at the busiest terminal in the country with no firm plans.

The sound of the city, after a month among the lakes and loons, is farcical. The many and various horns cry out like native birds, each with their own message to impart. The Solid Two-Second Burst, the morning song of the Overcaffeinated Late Woman. The Five Short Ones In A Row, the haunting tune of the professional cab driver. The Over And Over And Over Again Pulse, the searching song of the Man Actually Losing His Mind. All can be heard clearly and resonantly from Damian’s third floor walkup on Union Street and 6th Avenue in Brooklyn. And all can be heard on this short album recorded there. Probably the Jaws of Life too, which the fire fighters across the street test faithfully twice a day.

On this album you may also hear the singing bowls of personal reflection, the street-corner trumpet of regret, and the strummed chords of attempted reconciliation. Old jobs, previous apartments, and one-time watering holes were cobbled together into the rhythm section. We used the overactive radiator from my first place on 9th street for a drum loop and the sounds of kc’s neighbors copulating on Willoughby Avenue for the solo in Sensitive Man. Attempts at humor were quantized and left in for color. In one of the breaks you can hear someone, likely myself, snacking noisily on emotional junk food.

Gladly you will also at times hear Gregory Richardson on double bass, Samuel Daunt on fiddle, Eudi Fernandez on trumpet, Matt “The Drummer” Hayes on percussion, and Melissa Brough singing. You will most certainly hear Damian Quiñones on all manner of guitar, banjo, percussion, and vocals. You will also hear plenty of me, possibly more than you want, though I’ve tried to keep the songs short. Thank you for listening.

about

Ryan Harrison Los Angeles, California

Ryan Harrison is a singer and songwriter who blends elements from 60’s Brit Rock acts like The Kinks and The Zombies with 70’s Americana and folk acts like Loudon Wainwright and Warren Zevon. At turns playful, sarcastic, and deeply felt, Harrison’s songs run the gamut of tones and subject matter—but beneath them all lies a deep appreciation for lyrics and melody and an unmistakable wry wit. ... more
